Preface
This special issue of Czechoslovak Journal of Physics
(Vol. 49, No. 4a, 1999) contains the papers
presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled "Coordinated
Studies of the Solar Wind-Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Interaction:
INTERBALL Observations". The workshop was held
in Kosice, Slovakia from September 7 to 11, 1998.
The aim of the meeting was to emphasize the importance of
multispacecraft observations in determining the physics of the
Solar-Terrestrial relationship and to introduce the international
INTERBALL project to the scientific community. The meeting was
jointly organized by Faculty of Electrical Engineering and
Informatics, Technical University of Kosice, Faculty of Science,
P.J. Safarik University, and Institute of Experimental Physics,
Slovak Academy of Sciences, Kosice, Slovakia, and Faculty of
Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech
Republic. It was sponsored by NATO grant 972801. The scientific
program was organized by D.G.
Sibeck and K. Kudela.
During four busy days, there were 79 presentations of which 26
were invited lectures and the rest, posters. Invited papers will
be published in a Kluwer publication entitled "INTERBALL and
ISTP", and 15 papers were accepted for publication this
volume.
In closing we would like to thank the referees who worked so
hard at the meeting and afterward to review the papers, and thus
permitted the timely production of this volume. Last but not
least, we would like to thank our own staff, in particular
Lubomír Prech, Ondrej Santolík, Jan Merka and Marcela
Králíková who assisted in the preparation of the papers for
publication.
