Physica plasmaris ac materiae ionizatae
Physics of Plasma and Ionized Media
F-2 Branch of Graduate Doctoral Studies
The F-2 branch covers both theoretical and experimental research
in the physics of plasma, namely:
-
a low temperature anisotropic plasma, typically gas discharges,
-
hot plasma systems used in the controlled nuclear fusion research,
-
processes in the space plasma.
It also includes boundary disciplines such as the plasma chemistry or plasma interactions with solid matter surfaces.
A development of new diagnostic methods is a part in the branch scope, as well.
Some research is directly oriented to technical applications of plasmas.

From the preface of the Proceedings of Contributed Papers
of the 7th Annual Conference of Doctoral Students - WDS'98:
- Charles University is one of oldest european universities. It
was founded by Charles IV, King of Romans and Bohemia on April 7,
1348 and thus our University celebrates the 650th anniversary of
the University in present year. Mathematics and physics were
taught at the Faculty of Liberal Arts until 1920 when Faculty of
Natural Sciences was founded. Faculty of Mathematics and
Physics is relatively young, it was divided from Faculty of Natural
Sciences in 1953 but
organizes all kinds of a study including the graduate
study in mathematics, physics, and informatics.
- The Faculty
co--operates with specialists and prominent scientists from other
organizations and institutions, mainly from the Academy of
Sciences of the Czech Republic. Their assistance and help are
gratefully acknowledged.
- The education of doctoral students cannot be
based only on lectures and seminary work. Presentation of
original results is equally important part of their training. It is
true that some of our PhD students attend scientific conferences
in foreign countries and their contributions are accepted quite
well. However, the Faculty feels that it is worth to give the
opportunity of attending an international conference to all PhD
students. For this reason the Faculty has been organizing Week of
Doctoral Students every year since 1991. It is very important
that foreign PhD students as well as foreign professors take
part in this meeting.
-
Professor Jiri Andel
Vice-Dean for Student's Affairs
During doctoral studies, the students have to learn how to achieve original
scientific results and how to present them.
Conferences WDS'xxxx (Week of Doctoral Students) have been introduced in order to create for the
students the atmosphere
of a typical international conference for the presentation of their results. Besides the student contributions
(both oral and poster),
teachers from the students' home institutions are also invited to have lectures, extending or summarizing the topics of
student reports. The regular participations of graduate students and scientits from our foreign cooperating universities
is also worthwhile and very valuable.

14th Annual Conference of Doctoral Students -- WDS 2005
